Maria
Maria Magdalena has 2 daughters – Rosa Margarita (11 years) and Tonyia (3 years). Before working with Arte Comasagua Maria worked as a coffee picker at the local coffee plantations. When the mudslides destroyed the farm, she began commuting to San Salvador to wash clothes.
For Maria, working locally is so much better. “I don’t have to travel hours each day to and from work, risking my life in accidents and assaults. I have more time to be with my daughters and husband.”
She also greatly prefers the creative work to any other job she has held. “The work makes me feel important as a person. My art is being shown all over the world – people see it and are impressed with my skills. This makes me feel great.”
The income she earns helps her meet her family’s daily needs, which includes clothing, children’s education, and other necessities. She also enjoyshaving some spare money for herself. She proudly says, “I like being able to buy some cosmetics and other little treats for myself – it is very satisfying to be able to do this.”
