Making a Difference
Dear Friend of Hope For Women,
Fall has arrived and we are getting great news from our partners in India. We are in the process of expanding our network of women's groups to include a group from Gairsain, a remote village in Uttaranchal, India, high up in the Himalayas. We are going to develop new designs utilizing the unique plants found in this area, which will provide valuable employment to a new group of women.
Recently, two of our current artisans made the trip to Gairsain to train the new group and help them develop their skills. During the long trip up winding mountain roads, we heard directly from them on how their involvement with Hope For Women is changing their lives. Here is what they had to say:

"My husband is employed by the government but he spends all his money on alcohol. He drinks constantly and does not even give a single rupee to support the family. Due to my work with Hope For Women - I now run the family! I have 3 girls and all of them are studying. I am proud that I can manage to run the family on my own without his support."

"Both of my children now go to an English medium school because of the income I generate working with Hope For Women. Earlier they used to study in a poorly staffed local school where their education was limited. Before working with Hope For Women, the bread earner in our home was just my husband, who is a gardner, and his income was not enough to afford good education. Now my children are getting good education, have good books and school uniforms and plenty of food. I feel happy and healthy too!"

Our single card retail program is growing each week - we are now in 22 states working with a wide range of retail stores including: gift stores, coffee shops, book stores, food co-ops, fair trade stores, home and garden centers, art galleries and more!
